CHINESE MEDICINE AND INFERTILITY
Infertility problems are very common in USA. About 10% to 15% of couples are infertile. This imbalance is defined as not being able to get pregnant despite having frequent, unprotect sex for at least 1 year. The cause of infertility may be difficult to determine but may include inadequate levels of certain hormones in both men and women, and trouble with ovulation in women.
Infertility problem is a couple problem in which 35% of the cases are related to men, 35% to women and 30% are unexplained infertility. Infertility problems in men are related usually to low sperm count or low testosterone while in women common causes of infertility are endometriosis, uterine fibroids, polycystic ovary syndrome and more. Western medicine use hormone treatment for infertility problems.
In Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) infertility problems are treated by balancing the vital substances in your body (Qi and Blood). Instead of inject hormones, we stimulate your body to produce them.
In other words, if you are looking for having a beautiful garden, instead of dig and plant a tree, method that can fail due loosing part of the root and the original soil; in TCM we plant a seed, “nourish” and water the soil, stimulating the natural way to germinate the seed. We allow the nature to take its course.
The most commons diagnosis for infertility in TCM are cold in the uterus and blood stasis. Acupuncture and Chinese herbs are the most popular modalities for balancing your body. The goal in the treatment is to warm the uterus and break stagnations. Also increasing the flow of Qi and Blood to the uterus will increase the chances of pregnancy
As a holistic medicine, TCM also advice changes in life style. For example, it is very difficult for a woman to get pregnant if she always lives in sympathetic nervous system mode in other word if she lives under a lot of stress. Change in the diet is also very important, some foods are prone to produce dampness, hence phlegm, another pathogenic factor that will cause infertility.
